Best Smart Speakers in 2022

We show off the most capable smart speakers available in 2022.

Before we reveal our list of the best smart speakers, let’s examine 2 questions:

Q. What makes a speaker “smart?”

A. A speaker is “smart” when it features any,or all, of the following functions: Voice control, wireless connectivity, and/or an application designed for interface.

With so many new models released in the last few years, it can be near impossible to pick out the best smart speaker for your space.

Q. Is every smart speaker equally capable?

A. No. Some models are designed for traveling, and thus are built more durably. Some are even water-proof!

Most smart speakers can be connected to other speakers in your home or workplace, but not all can.

Some of these speakers are light and portable, and battery-operated, while some are heavier and require being plugged in.

There are a couple of entries on the list below, that offer different color options, and others that come in one shade.

Confused? Not to worry! We loved testing all these speakers for you, and we can’t wait to share what we know

Tech-Life Boss

This portable power-house is weather proof and sounds amazing!

The Tech-Life Boss is a top-rated smart speaker on Amazon, so it belongs at, or near, the top of our list!

Its sound quality is exceptional and the versatile speaker is compact but it sounds huge.

The Boss fits right into your backpack, and its durable, weather-resistant body could survive being mounted on your outdoor patio.

Size: 4.5″x 4.5″x 6.5″

Weight: 2.25 lbs.

Color: Black

Compared to the other rugged entries on this list, the Boss’ price tag is pretty impressive, at $149.99.

This is a durable and hyper-functional smart speaker, but its sound quality is its best feature. The Boss has the most impressive low-end output in its own price range.

The speaker’s high frequencies are ahead of the field, too and Tech-Life’s multilink capability offers some incredible possibilities for expansion, so you’ll have multiple options to consider.

  • Superb Bass
  • Superior quality/price ratio
  • Durable, overall quite well-built
  • You can find better smart speakers, but not at this price, not buy a long shot.

This is easily our pick for best smart speaker at $150 and under. It just checks too many boxes to be overlooked.

Bose Home Speaker 500

Practically unbeatable sound-quality from one of the top home-theater brands

Bose has been a reputable name in home stereo for decades, and if you have a little more to spend on a shelf speaker, the Home Speaker 500 would look sharp in your living room.

As one would expect, this is an incredible sounding smart speaker.

Size: 8″x6.7″x4.3″

Weight: 4.75 lbs.

Color: Silver or Black

Beyond its sound quality and aesthetic appeal, the Home Speaker 500 runs into minor connectivity issues, according to some reviews. And while we connected with absolutely no problems – we feel its worth mentioning, given the cost.

If you need portability, or durability, this one probably isn’t your bag, but the Home Speaker 500 should be a top consideration for jazzing up the shelf in your living room.

  • Spectacular dynamic range
  • Alexa built-in
  • Beautiful, sharp design
  • Expensive
  • Not portable
  • interface lacking

The Bose Home Theater 500 looks and sounds beautiful.

If you’ve had a long history of Bose products in your life, you already know just how high-quality they feel, when listening.

They’re pretty easy on the eyes too.

Amazon Echo Shttps://amzn.to/3JiNWDQtudio

The best of Amazon’s Echo line is available at half the cost of other similarly capable smart speakers

The most advanced Alexa-controlled speaker is possibly the best value on the list.

The Amazon Echo Studio is larger than any other speaker under $200 that we’ve tested. And its among the heaviest as well.

Size: 8.1″ 6.9″

Weight: 7.7 lbs.

Color: Black and Red

The Echo Studio’s most appropriate comparison would be to the far more expensive Apple HomePod, or Google Home Max.

While it is worth noting that the Studio needs to be plugged in, that’s hardly a non-starter for such an inexpensive powerhouse.

The woofer points downward from an open port, giving a sub-woofer quality to low frequencies.

  • Very powerful for low-cost
  • Clear, loud, omnidirectional
  • compact, space-efficient
  • Best with Amazon Music HD
  • Pretty heavy
  • Must be plugged in

This is an exceptional value! The Echo Studio really sounds exquisite, and Alexa voice controls function effectively, and they’re always improving.

Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin

An updated classic

Released in 2021, the newest Zeppelin is a bit more versatile, and also a bit more expensive, than previous models.

The speaker weighs 16 lbs and its dimensions are 26″x 7″x 7.”

Size: 26″x7″x7″

Weight: 16 lbs.

Color: Grey and Black

Bowers & Wilkins has released updated versions of its beloved Zeppelin consistently since its original debut, fifteen years ago.

The sharply designed smart speaker is a true joy to listen to, whether you’re filling your home with music, or enjoying your favorite podcast or movie.

The appearance hasn’t changed over the course of the Zeppelin’s history, and neither has its sound quality, which is among the finest on the market.

  • Awesome, adjustible sound quality
  • impressive, iconic design
  • helpful apps
  • Expensive
  • Stereo seperation lacking

Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Specs

Why we like it

For a non-portable smart speaker, you can’t do much better than the Zeppelin from Bowers & Wilkins.

If you have the budget, we think you should consider this incredible option. It looks pretty impressive on the shelf, too.

Sonos Move

A top notch, portable speaker that can turn your backyard into a theater.

Sonos has gone a step beyond their standard multi-room technology with this durable, weather-proof, mono-speaker!

Large (9.5″x6.3″x5.0″), powerful and water-resistant, the Sonos Move delivers some serious bass! But the 6.6 lb. speaker isn’t ideal for backpacks.

Available in black or white, the Move can’t be completely engulfed in water, for any period, but will survive pool splashes and heavy rain.

Size: 9.5″ x 6.3″ x 5.0

Weight: 6.6 lbs.

Color: Black

The speaker’s build is sturdy enough to be left in the sun forever, and it can even take a drop or get knocked over with little or no consequence.

There are touch-sensitive controls on the top panel, and the Move works with the Sonos App for Android and iOS.

Setup is a very simple process and updates come through the app.

  • Superb sound quality and bass depth
  • Portable
  • Extremely durable
  • Very Heavy
  • Expensive
  • Mono

Sonos Move Specs

Voice ControlAlexa, Google Assistant
Why we like it

The Sonos Move is built to take a beating. Like any Mono speaker, its not for everyone, and the price is high. But the Move has an extremely high threshhold for abuse and the bass is so hard!

Amazon Echo (4th Gen)

The best deal for Alexa users

Amazon’s original smart speaker has a new spherical design, and comes equipped with the same smart-hub technology as the more expensive Echo Plus.

The Echo is 5.2″ tall and 5.7″ wide. Its 3-inch woofer and two .8-inch tweeters give off pretty good low-end, and the speakers support Dolby Audio.

  • Same power as Echo Plus
  • Awesome Bass
  • Smart Home Hub
  • High frequencies lacking
  • Alexa improving gradually
  • No speakerphone

Amazon Echo (4th Gen) Specs

Voice ControlAlexa
Why we like it

In its fourth generation, The Echo has a whole lot to offer for such a well-priced smart speaker.

Available in black, blue and white its fabric and aluminum are 100-percent recycled.

We think anyone who uses Alexa should give the Amazon Echo serious consideration, as it is one of the best smart speakers for budgets.

Sonos One (2nd Gen)

An exceptional, more affordable option from one of our favorite brands.

The truly excellent second-generation, Sonos One checks enough boxes at its price point to be cosidered a top smart speaker in 2022.

Effectively, there is no real difference between this generation of the Sonos One, and its previous model, now called the Sonos One (Generation one.)

However, Sonos has added a new processor to the second-generation model, and larger memory, which allows future upgrades to the speaker.

Missing from both versions is bluetooth connectivity, so if that’s a deal-breaker for you, you should skip this one. If not, you may consider the Sonos One the best smart speaker available!

Size:6.3″ x 4.7″ x 4.7″

Weight: 4 lbs.

Color: Black

The dimensions of the Sonos One are 6.3″x 4.7″x 4.7″, and it weighs about 4 lbs. Its power connector is at the bottom of the unit.

If the Sonos One’s lack of bluetooth connectivity is not a major issue for you, then this may be your best smart speaker.

And considering the smart speaker’s rich, lush mid-range output, and striking affordability, you may reconsider the importance of Bluetooth.

  • Excellent sound quality
  • Flexible stereo configurations
  • Alexa and Google Assistant availability
  • No Bluetooth connectivity
  • Not portable
  • Poor high-volume output

Sonos One (Gen two) Specs

Voice ControlAlexa, Google Assistant
Why we like it

The wonderful sound quality of the Sonos One is so outstanding, we feel it more than makes up for its connectivity shortcomings.

Amazon Echo Dot (4th Gen)

The compact design of the Echo Dot is more popular than ever.

Last year alone, Amazon sold over 65 million units worldwide. That’s no big surprise given the affordibility, and consistent, high quality of its flagship smart speaker.

Size: 3.9″ x3.9″ x3.5″

Weight: 12.3 oz.

Color: Blue

The Echo Dot isn’t as water-proof or portable. It doesn’t have booming low-end or room-filling sound capabilities.

Still, at about sixty bucks, the Amazon Echo Dot is a perfect smart speaker for your desk, or nightstand, with plenty of mid and high-range output for personal use.

  • Great Price
  • Compact, Stylish
  • Nifty Display
  • Lacking Low-end
  • Not particularly rugged or durable
  • Limited power

Amazon Echo Dot (4th Gen) Specs

Voice ControlAlexa
Why we like it

The Amazon Echo Dot is a great desk-speaker. Its also a perfect gift for any Alexa user, and it definitely won’t break your bank.

Logitech Ultimate Ears Boom 3

This lightweight, durable speaker sounds awesome, and has over fifteen hours of battery life.

The Ultimate Ears Boom 3, from Logitech, is one of the best travel-speakers on the market. Its battery lasts about 15 hours, so you can take this sweet-sounding smart speaker around with you all day long!

Size: 2.9″ x 2.9″ x 7.25″

Weight: 1.8 lbs.

Color: Blue, Black, Purple, Red or Green

The Boom 3 is also the most truly waterproof speaker on the list. It can survive being engulfed in water for about 30 minutes, and Logitech claims the speaker is “drop proof,” which we tested, successfully.

While the Boom 3’s battery, and toughness are in leaugues of their own, the main drawback to this afforbable smart speaker is its sound quality.

There are other speakers in the same price range that offer better sound, but the Boom 3’s linking capabilities may solve that issue for most consumers.

Still, compared to other 360-degree speakers, which are typically mono, the Boom 3 takes the stereo approach; its drivers fire in opposing directions. so it sounds a bit wider than other comparably-priced mono smart speakers.

  • Exceptional battery life
  • Tough, durable build
  • Large, smart buttons
  • Sounds good, not great
  • Lacking low-end dynamics
  • No voice control

Logitech Ultimate Ears Boom 3 Specs

Voice ControlNo
Why we like it

The Boom 3 is our favorite speakers for easy traveling! Its super light-weight and we dont feel bad dropping it more than twice. If toughness is important to you, this is your pick for the best smart speaker!
